Application Process

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra is a professional, per-service orchestra which performs five pairs of Masterworks concerts, daytime Young People's Concerts, a summer outdoor concert, and occasional other programs.

In general: At each fall audition event, AUXILIARIES and SUBSTITUTES are sought for all instruments, and particularly for strings.

Compensation is based on a per-service rate.  Limited assistance with driving costs is available to musicians from outside the immediate area, as is local housing in private homes. Board is not provided. If you are from outside a practical commuting distance, see this information for out-of-area musicians.

All candidates must be US citizens, or be otherwise eligible for employment in the United States.

Application Process: Application is by email submission of a resume of two pages or less, detailing full contact information, position applied for (“substitute horn,” “roster violin,” etc), and relevant education and experience. Professional references from colleagues or teachers are welcome. Applicants will be notified shortly after the application deadline passes as to when their audition will be held, and other details of procedure on the day.

Audition Repertoire:

Unless a specific solo is stated in the appropriate repertoire list below, each candidate should prepare a two-minute solo demonstrating lyrical and technical abilities, in addition to the excerpts.

During the audition, all candidates should first perform their selected solo, and then proceed to the excerpts, which may be performed in the order of their choosing.

Percussionists have no solo requirement, but will be expected to sightread.
